New Culinary Facility
Sacramento City Unified School District is working together with Food Literacy Center, Landmark Construction and HMC Architects to create a 2.5-acre urban farm and teaching kitchen classroom on the Leataata Floyd Elementary School Campus. This education center will serve high school and elementary school students to offer nutrition and health curriculum such as cooking classes and garden education.
The “Broccoli Headquarters” as the Food Literacy Center has been dubbed, is also a Zero Net Energy building, designed with the latest energy efficiency technology and enough solar energy to offset the building’s annual energy use. Landmark is proud to be constructing this central hub which promises to improve health, economy and the environment for the surrounding community.
Sustainability is a priority in the design of Floyd Farms. The building utilizes corrugated metal wall panels, redwood siding, an extended roof to provide shade in the outdoor classroom area, and rainwater collection barrels. The interior consists of a 4,800 SF culinary arts classroom commercial kitchen, and offices to support this program. Site improvements include essential parking and fire access, DSA required path of travel upgrades to the building and outdoor patio/classroom facing the future farm. To achieve the District’s Zero Net Energy goal, free-standing solar panels are being installed on the grounds as well.
